Our New Adopted Annual Volunteer Missionary, Julie Gerrish in Senegal
The ELCA has a new program, Young Adult Global Missions, YAGM, recruiting young volunteers for one year postings to a mission field.
This should greatly strengthen the faith and resolve of some volunteers who may well continue supporting missionary work after they resume their lives and careers, and should dramatically enhance the awareness of their home churches about spiritual, educational, cultural, health, and economic needs of peoples living in other parts of the world.
Our own church should benefit by learning about the challenges these young volunteers face, especially if we adopt a different one each year, in a different mission field. Perhaps in the future one of our own members may volunteer to join YAGM, as Katie Kam had joined the Assemblies of God Church to visit Southern Russia.
For 2016-2017, we have contracted to adopt Julie Gerrish who arrived in Senegal in September.
She has written some interesting notes about her first impressions in her blog; https://julieinsenegalblog.wordpress.com/about/
